I must apologize for the gross delay with the series updates, and I’m sure you don’t want to hear about games that happened a week ago, so I’ve put some notes abotu the Cubs on the whole below and updated the Bullpen GPA and Hero Squad/Goat Bastards list.
Also, say hello to your mother for me.
Cubs tie the series against the Giants, win against the Astros, lose against the Brewers: W-L, W-W, L-L-W
Cubs Series Record: 5-4-2 (17-14 overall)
- Jeff Samardzija went down, Chad Fox came up and promptly ended his career with a 135.01 in his final season of play. He said he felt like someone hit his arm with a hammer when he threw a wild pitch. Sadly, and without as much malice as I would usually squeeze into this next statement, this is some of the best news the Cubs’ bullpen has received in quite some time. Jose Ascanio has taken Fox’s place on the roster, but for how long?Maybe Samardzija got sent down so he can come back and start in Zambrano’s spot (though kudos to Randy Wells first start: 5 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 5 Ks), or maybe he just isn’t what the Cubs are looking for right now.
- Aramis Ramirez just killed the Cubs for the next 4-6 weeks with a separated shoulder. In a contiuation of my shameless plugs, I will remind avid MWS readers that third base was the one position the Cubs could ill afford an injury, because of their lack of depth.I. Told. You. So. Honestly, if you’re looking for a creative solution to this problem, what about moving Derrek Lee (presuming he ever gets health) to the other side of the diamond? The man is a top-notch, gold-glove caliber first baseman, could he make the switch? Micah Hoffpauir has proven he deserves all of the at-bats he needs just as much as Aaron Miles has proved he’s useless. Can’t Lou Piniella play mad scientist? If not, bring up 3B prospects Josh Vitters or Tyler Colvin and inject some life into this struggling offense.
Bullpen season GPA: 2.60(B-/C+) GPA through 31 games. Danger! Danger! It’s starting to get harder and harder to get it to the coveted 3.0 GPA that I believe is necessary to make the playoffs.
