2008 Minor League Player of the Year Mat Gamel has been called up the major leagues. Yes, this move was announced yesterday, and yes, he even already had his first major league at-bat. But I was doing some on-site investigative reporting at Miller Park, and with my own eyes, I can tell you that Gamel looks like he belongs in the bigs even though he struck out. But that could just be because I was drunk. Whatever. Gamel = Future stud.

In 33 games so far this season at AAA Nashville, he was hitting .336 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBI. He still hates defense – eight errors at 3B already, but he’ll be used mostly as a DH during road interleague series over the next month or so. He was brought up early to grab some ABs and get used to the atmosphere with the big club. The team did the same thing with Prince Fielder a few years back, and that worked out nicely.

The corresponding roster move was to send Brad Nelson down to AAA. He was out of minor league options, so he had the choice of accepting the assignment or free agency. It was reported today that he chose free agency. Look, I think he’s a good player who can really hit. He needs to lose a few pounds if he wants to play the outfield, but he’ll catch on somewhere. Nonetheless, dude, you’re 0-for-21 this year. Swallow your pride, get back to the minors, and get your confidence back. He’ll get a minor league contract somewhere, but it’s tough to see him go after seven years in the Brewers organization just because he was slumping and likely took offense to the demotion.
